Going back five generations!
Buck Shoals Vineyards rolls across farmland that has been in the Crater family for five generations. The vineyards grow in the midst of the Yadkin County Amish community that includes leather shops, wooden carpentry businesses, a bakery & deli, a general store and various other Amish businesses. Their community also includes a church and school. Horse drawn buggies and surreys can be seen regularly on Windsor Road and this Amish presence is represented with the horse and buggy cupolas on the roof of the winery.

The legacy of the name comes from Buck Shoals Creek, which meanders about two miles from the vineyard and runs alongside Crater Road. This creek was the home of Buck Shoals Mill, circa 1890, where grain and corn were stone ground by a water powered wheel and converted to flour, cornmeal and feed. The mill was built and run until the 1950's when it was closed. The wooden mill was razed in the 1960's with only the dam, sluice and rock foundations remaining.

Owned by Terry and Joanne Crater, Buck Shoals Vineyard produces wines of the Bordeaux variety, growing eleven varieties but specializing in the Italian reds. Buck Shoals Vineyard has expanded to include a distillery (a copper pot still) which will make brandies and some other spirits. The final Amarones (the raisin wine) are being developed with plans to also do a honey wine.

The elevation of 1150 feet and soil type at Buck Shoals is similar to many wine growing areas in Italy. You are welcome to pick and enjoy table grapes as you stroll along the path from the log cabin tasting room facility to the observation gazebo with its view of the Brushy Mountains facility.

The vineyard manager is Marty Crater, providing another set of hands to aid Joanne in vineyard and tasting room operations, while Terry provides farming expertise and overall management of the business and winery. E.R. Crater, Jr. and his wife of 60 years, Edna, provide a watchful eye and moral support. Local volunteer help is always welcomed.
